As the season comes to an end in a variety of countries across the globe, it’s been another busy weekend of action for the Maltese plying their trades abroad.

From England to New Zealand, Cyprus to Italy, the contingent of Maltese playing in professional leagues overseas is increasing at a quick rate. Add to that a number of players who are part of the Maltese diaspora in countries such as the UK, Australia and Canada, and there is plenty of Maltese interest.

The first weekend of April was another busy one for Maltese players overseas. After a two week international break, the various players returned to club duty across the globe. Some were looking to enhance promotion credentials, others were looking to keep their clubs clear of trouble at the wrong end of the table.

Easter Monday saw another action packed programme in both the UK and Australia / New Zealand. There were Maltese players involved and having a say at both ends of the tables in their respective competitions.

Yesterday also saw the signing by Aston Villa of Oscar Borg who was previously with West Ham’s youth sides. Although UK-born, Borg is of Maltese heritage and eligible to represent the country’s national sides.

With the Easter Weekend mixed with the international window, the fixture computer has had to work overtime this week. And with Malta’s friendly against Moldova on Thursday, and the Under-21’s qualifier against Montenegro Under-21’s last Wednesday, many Maltese players based abroad were not involved in club action this week.
